Is it really possible to be happy at work (even in summer)?

25. 07. 2019 ·

We believe everyone should be happy at work and everyone can do something about it. However, we realize it is not about cool offices, free fruit or table football, but rather about meaningful work and good relationships. This is why our HR team has created the initiative Fresh & Happy Newsletter, which regularly brings tips for a happier life not only at work.

In July, we tested four tips that we want to share.

1. Gratitude - Recall at least one thing you are grateful for.

Research has shown, that people who were writing their „gratitude diaries“(= wrote down what they were thankful for that particular day showed that they then felt happier, optimistic, and healthier. The magic is that the processes in the brain are very similar when we recall pleasant experiences as when we experience them. Moreover, by focusing on the positive we will really become more optimistic, and will pay more attention to the positive things.

2. Physical activity - Take at least 10 minutes of physical activity each day.

Regular physical activity is the best prescription for depressive moods, anxiety, as it stimulates endorphins, that make us happier and more resistant to pain. Did you know that 10 minutes a day is enough to get the effect? Try walking the stairs instead taking the lift of the elevator, riding a bike instead of taking the bus, or at least try not sitting while working for 5 minutes every hour. Besides, of course, do all the sports you love, with people you love 😊

3. Helping Others – Give others your helping hand, your time or reason to smile

When helping others, there are similar processes happening in our brain like when we are in love or do sports. Moreover, it has been shown, that people who selflessly help as volunteers are not only happier but also healthier. Helping others improves relationships, and makes them help us back. All you need to do is talk to someone you have not talked to for a long time, make coffee for your colleague or buy them a cake, or help them with hard task.

4. Body-Mind Relationship - Straight posture and smile can really make you feel better.

The physiological theory of emotions claims that emotions are not the result of physiological changes in organism, but the cause of them. To put it simply - we are not smiling because we are happy, but we are happy because we are smiling. Whether true or not, our body and our mind are closely linked. It has been shown, that straight posture while sitting or standing correlates with better mood and better attention and performance. Smile produces endorphins and dopamine - hormones of happiness and reward.
